The George Washington Carver Regional High School Alumni Association (GWCRHSAA) is hosting an exhibit in honor of Black History Month titled, “Sacrifice and Hope: What Have You Done with Your Freedom?”

“It is often said that black history is American history, and that is particularly true for this exhibit,” said Charles Jameson, President of GWCRHSAA. “Tracking the movements of African American men from Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties who joined the Civil War on the side of the Union show their flights from slavery to free states, their sale from one plantation to another until drafted, their settlement in states throughout the country once the war had ended, and the lives they tried to rebuild afterwards.”

The exhibit is curated by Terry Miller, researcher and writer. “Civil War artifacts share space with the names and muster cards of more than 250 soldiers. In addition, extensive information about 16 soldiers is shared – one from each county with service in Cavalry, Infantry, Light Artillery and Heavy Artillery regiments,” she stated.

Free and open to the public, the exhibit is made possible by a generous grant from the Richard Lykes Fund, Northern Piedmont Community Foundation.
